The Challenge of Extreme Heat Environments

There are many industries today that operate at constant high temperatures. In these applications standard industrial-grade lighting simply fails in ambient temperatures of 45-50° C. There are several forms of failure including: rapid lumen depreciation, color shift, driver failure, and reduced life of the LED chips.

Facilities dealing with these conditions include:

Steel mills and foundries

Glass manufacturing plants

Ceramic and brick production facilities

Industrial bakeries and food processing

Powder coating operations

Automotive paint booths

Metalworking and heat treatment facilities

Boiler rooms and engine compartments

Facilities with industrial high temperature applications can be a nightmare for maintenance because of the number of constant changes. Not only is there a cost to the new fixture, but you are left running around trying to come up with a solution in the meantime. Even when you have installed a good amount of quality lighting in your industrial plant, there is always the chance of accidents or decrease in productivity caused by inadequate lighting.

High temperature high bay LED lighting is designed to operate in extreme thermal conditions and provides reliable solutions for all high temperature applications.

How High Temperature LED High Bays Work

Standard LED fixtures are not designed for high temperature environments. As temperature increases, the electronic components and even the LED chips can degrade rapidly. High temperature high bay LED lighting has been engineered to function in extreme thermal conditions.

Advanced Thermal Management

Many of the commercial grade fixtures found on the market that are designed to operate in high temperature environments have large aluminum heat sinks. The heat sinks can be oversized to allow for maximum surface area for heat dissipation or have extra large fins that allow for efficient heat transfer. There are also some of the high end of the high temperature rating fixtures that incorporate heat pipes into the fixture. These heat pipes allow for maximum effectiveness in the transfer of heat from hot components in the fixture to other areas of the fixture where the heat can then be dissipated.

Heat-Resistant Components

These fixtures have been designed with the goal of maintaining all critical components (such as heat sinks and printed circuit boards) at safe temperatures in 90°C ambient conditions. They utilize the highest temperature parts, such as long-life heat resistant LED chips, high temperature-rated power supply components, flexible high temperature resistant gaskets, and a high-grade durable housing that can be used for long periods of time at high temperatures without losing performance.

Benefits of High Temperature High Bay LED Lighting

Reliable Performance in Extreme Heat

Unlike typical types of LED fixtures that can fail in hot environments, high temperature LED high bay lighting really works in hot environments. This type of high bay lighting maintains the rated lumen and color temperature of the fixture at 90°F ambient temperature. People who use standard LED high bay lighting experience a cycle of frequent failures and premature demise of their lighting systems followed by costly repairs and replacement. High temperature high bay fixtures provide a reliable lighting system for years to come.

Extended Operational Lifespan

Quality high temperature high bay LED lighting is built to last with a long life of 50,000+ hours, as opposed to normal LED lighting that can fail in a few months in extreme heat. High temperature high bay LED lighting is also far superior to typical HID lighting that have to have bulbs replaced frequently, even if they last for years.

Significant Energy Savings

High temperature LED high bays are more energy efficient than other lighting solutions of high bays (like metal halide or high-pressure sodium high bays) by up to 50-70% and they deliver the same or even better amount of light.

Many industries consider the energy savings from the use of LED lighting to be critical. While the amount of money saved per fixture in a year is commonly over $200-400 for 12-24 hours a day running facilities, for large manufacturing plants and industrial buildings this can translate into significant yearly savings.

Improved Safety and Productivity

For environments where most work is done with molten material, heavy machinery, or very precise parts, the light from high temperature high bay LED lighting will help illuminate the area. This is especially important in preventing accidents in low light and in assuring that products are made to the highest quality.

The High Temperature High Bay LED Lighting has excellent color rendering. Therefore, it clearly shows the colors of objects and surfaces. This is very important when working with color coded materials. It also helps in detecting defects and in accurate work with detailed parts and components.

Instant On Performance

Unlike metal halide or high pressure sodium lighting that requires 10 to 15 minutes to reach full brightness after start up, our high temperature high bay LED lighting is immediately 100% at full brightness after power-up. This makes the high temperature high bay LED lighting an ideal choice for facilities that operate at irregular hours, or need emergency lighting.

Reduced Maintenance Burden

In typical industrial environments there are many instances where the long life of high temperature high bay LED lighting, combined with the great performance of such lighting and the reduced need for maintenance of high temperature high bay LED lighting can be very advantageous.

More advantages

Lumen Output and Efficacy

170+ lumens per watt to maximize energy efficiency.

Color Temperature

2700K-6500K color temperature options - High light output and bright, crisp light to maximize visibility and create alertness.

IP and IK Ratings

IP-rated lighting is used in many environments to safeguard against dust and water. In high-temperature environments, the risk of physical impact also has to be considered. For such applications, high temperature high bay fixtures are available with IP66 / IP68 or higher degree of protection against ingress of water and dust, combined with IK 10+ impact tested, e.g. by dropping a sample from a height of 1 meter.

Applications for High Temperature High Bay LED Lighting

These are the various types of industries in which High Temperature High Bay LED Lighting can be used.

Steel and Metal Processing

High-Temperature High Bay Fixtures are utilized in various industries with high-temperature furnaces.
