Illumination system for ocean-going vessels

The lighting system on a ship is not only related to the safety of the ship’s navigation, but also has an impact on the daily life and work of the crew. It is a very important system on the ship. According to different purposes, the lighting systems on ships can be divided into main lighting systems, emergency lighting systems, navigation lights and signal lighting systems.

Main lighting system

The main lighting system of the ship is distributed in the places where the crew lives and works, so as to provide enough lighting for the crew rooms, cabins and working places. At present, the main lighting system adopts almost all fluorescent lamps. However, due to the harsh working environment on board and many uncertain factors, the failure rate of fluorescent lamps is relatively higher than that on shore. Therefore, sufficient spare lamps should be prepared on board. Replace when necessary.

Emergency lighting system

The emergency lighting system is divided into a large emergency lighting system and a small emergency lighting system. During normal lighting, the large emergency lighting system is part of the main lighting system and provides lighting together with it. When the main lighting system fails to illuminate, the large emergency lighting system will be used as emergency lighting.

The small emergency lighting system is also called a temporary emergency system. The lamps are painted with red paint, usually 15W incandescent lamps, powered by batteries. It is mainly distributed in places such as the bridge, escalator openings and important places in the engine room, and the number is relatively small.

Navigation light and signal light lighting system

Navigation lights are turned on when the ship is sailing at night or when the visibility is poor. It is used to indicate the corresponding position of the ship. It mainly consists of fore masthead lights, main masthead lights, stern lights, and port and port lights. Navigation lights generally use 60W twin-filament incandescent lamps, with double sets, one for use and one for preparation.

Signal lights are a type of lamps that indicate the state of the ship or provide light language. Generally, there are surround lights, anchor lights, flash lights, and communication flash lights. It generally adopts two-way power supply and realizes control on the bridge. Ports or narrow waterways in certain countries also have special requirements, so the setting of signal lights for ocean-going ships is more complicated.

In addition, a search and rescue light will also be installed on the starboard position above the bridge to prevent search and rescue work when people fall into the water and other emergencies.
